Jim Sellers

Jim Sellers is a sought-after jazz pianist who has performed for over 20 years with such jazz luminaries as Spider Saloff, John Whitfield, Bill Yancey, Johny Faren, Ava Logan, Gina Gibson and many others. In Chicago, he has performed at such premiere jazz venues as the Jazz Showcase, The Green Mill, Andy’s Live Jazz, Pete Miller’s, Pop’s for Champagne, Joe’s Bebop Café, Philanders in Oak Park and many others.

Jim’s C.D. “House Hour” features original compositions and arrangements, and includes outstanding performances by saxophonist Frank Catalano and trumpeter Art Davis. His “unambiguous attack of the keyboard” and “witty” arrangements (The Jazz Institute of Chicago) are well-known among Chicago jazz aficionados.

Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s jazz radio program on what was then WXFM. He taught himself how to play the blues and improvise, and by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, Jim was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. Jim went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

A yearlong engagement as the leader of a jazz trio four nights a week at Chicago’s Yvette Wintergarden on Wacker Drive launched Jim’s performing career. During this time he also wrote arrangements and original compositions for a ten-piece swing band. In addition to performing, Jim has been teaching at the Bloom School of Jazz for the last eight years alongside Spider Saloff, Paul Wertico and others.

Jim’s finesse, distinctive piano style and sheer passion for music keep him in demand as a performer in Chicago and beyond.
