Having become spell-bound by the sound of snare drums being played by school kids in his elementary school band, rather than playing with the other children at recess, and on other breaks, Joe would spend much of this time watching and listen to them practice. He eventually joined the band and began to learn the art of drumming. After graduating to high school, he continued to study and play music. Once out of high school, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he lost the use of his right hand. This ended his drumming career for many years. In fact, it would be nearly 25 years before crushed bones in his right hand would heal well enough to afford him the opportunity to see if he could revitalize the interest and technical abilities he once posessed.


Someone once said to learn to ride a bike is something you'll always know, no matter how long you've been away from one. Unfortunately, that's not true with music instruments; the longer you stay away, the longer it takes to get back.

So, ten years ago, Joe decided he'd take advantage of a benefit awarded to him as a result of his service to his country, and enrolled in a bachelor of arts program in music education at Chicago State University. He also began playing around town with musicians, many whom had been playing for decades. Finding, he could hold his own, he looked for other sessions like these to continue learning the craft. He began playing in a band about this time, too. He took classes at other colleges in harmony, theory, and many other music subjects. Little by little, he began gaining the skill level and confidence to play with any musician, and on any stage.

Today, he has come full circle and is positioning himself as a drummer/musician, combo leader(The Global Peace Quintet), and composer.
