The 2008 JVC Jazz Festival Chicago pays tribute to one of America’s great jazz cities and its vibrant club scene. On July 18 and 19 many of the Windy City’s most renowned jazz clubs will host this celebration of jazz with a local twist, the shows will feature collaborations between local Chicago-area greats and touring “national act” jazz giants.
Sixty years young and recently re-opened, the Jazz Showcase will feature the influential contemporary guitarist John Abercrombie and Chicago saxophone great Eric Schneider. Andy’s will feature the young homegrown trumpet star Corey Wilkes with guest alto sax player Greg Osby. The Green Mill will present the huge sound of local sax legends Von Freeman, Ari Brown and Frank Catalano. Fred Anderson, creative force behind the exploratory Velvet Lounge, will front New York City’s iconic bassist William Parker at the Velvet. Kicking it all off on Friday night at the House of Blues, fans will get a shot to hear rock star Pat Benatar in a unique one-time JVC Fest appearance.
