ISYM is a comprehensive and intensive program of music instruction for student musicians. It is held on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. For the past 59 years, Illinois Summer Youth Music has enrolled more than one thousand students annually. Many are now performing in major symphony orchestras and other professional ensembles. A significant number are successful teachers, engineers, scientists, lawyers, doctors and business executives.

Dates of camp: Junior and Senior Jazz, July 5-11, 2009
Daily Schedule: Activities at Illinois Summer Youth Music begin at 8:00 a.m. and end with lights out at 10:30 p.m. Daytime activities may include large or small ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, technique and repertoire classes, elective classes, and individual practice time. Evening activities include recreation such as movie night, swimming, bowling, billiards, basketball, soccer, and access to the University’s arcade games. Some evening activities will be devoted to attending a concert either at the Krannert Center, on the University’s Quad, or in another School of Music performance venue.

Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp

The Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp is a comprehensive week-long program designed to foster the aspiring jazz vocalist’s artistic concept, musical knowledge, performance and improvisation skills by working with an outstanding artist faculty of professional performing and recording artists. The entire curriculum focuses on the solo vocalist. All ages welcome from high school and college students to adult vocalists and jazz educators. Nightly staff artist concerts and student jam sessions. The week concludes with a final concert featuring individual students with the Staff Rhythm Section.

Established by James Dutton on a rural historic farmstead, Birch Creek has grown from 3 buildings, 12 students and one concert to 200 students, nearly 100 faculty members, 32 concerts, and a 12-building residential campus. Birch Creek is known nation-wide for 2-week sessions in symphony, percussion & steelpan, & big band jazz taught by some of the finest professional performers in the field.

Camp History:
For almost forty years, musicians from all over the globe have turned to Jamey Aebersold’s "Summer Jazz Workshops" to improve their jazz playing. During this time, the workshops have earned a reputation for producing the best intensive programs for learning jazz improvisation. Whether a beginning improviser or a seasoned pro, you’ll leave the Workshops and Seminars with tons of new and exciting ideas about how to improve your playing.
Each year, the Summer Jazz Workshops assemble more than sixty of the nation’s leading educators and performers dedicated to providing an intensive learning experience for musicians of all ages and levels. Theory Classes, Ear Training, Combo Performance, and Master Class Sessions allow individuals the opportunity to grow and develop to their fullest potential.
The week-long workshops are the best place to learn jazz through hands-on experience. With over sixty All-Star faculty members for each week, participants are assured of getting plenty of attention in rehearsals and classes. We welcome all instruments, including rhythm section, strings and vocalists.
