The avant-jazz band Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls will celebrate the release of “Seize the Time” (NAIM) at the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway, on Saturday, March 7 from 8PM-midnight. Drummer Ted Sirota will lead Jeb Bishop on trombone, Greg Ward on alto sax, Kevin Kizer on tenor sax, Dave Miller on guitar, and Jake Vinsel on bass.
Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls was formed by Chicago-based drummer Ted Sirota in 1996. This will mark the band’s sixth release on the Naim and Delmark labels. Rebel Souls have their roots in the rebellious jazz and improvised music of the 1960s but draw on myriad styles, including afro-pop, funk, reggae, ska, and hip-hop, to help cultivate what The Reader has called their “immediately recognizable sound”.
The politically outspoken Sirota is not the sort of avant-garde improviser who plays atonal music exclusively – far from it. Sirota has favored an inside/outside approach, and while he can be abstract, intellectual, angular, or cerebral, he can also be quite musical and melodic. Compositionally, Sirota brings a long list of influences to his recordings – a list that includes, among others, Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, reggae icon Bob Marley, and the late Nigerian star Fela Kuti (who was greatly influenced by modal jazz).
Sirota has been a regular at the Green Mill for the last fourteen years, playing every Saturday in the late-night band Sabertooth.
