The November/December issue of Chicago Jazz Magazine is the last issue of 2011, and what a year it has been on the Chicago jazz scene! As we approach Thanksgiving, it reminds me of how thankful I am for what I have, including the many people without whom the magazine and website would not be able to exist.
First, thanks to the writers and contributors to Chicago Jazz Magazine and ChicagoJazz.com for their incredible passion, for the music and their ability to put down on paper the passion that they feel in their hearts. Special thanks for the support given to the magazine by Chicagoland jazz musicians. Their ongoing dedication and drive to present successful performances on a nightly basis has helped to push Chicago into one of the most happening music cities in the world. Of course, last but not least, thank you Chicago Jazz Magazine and ChicagoJazz.com readers.
The supportive notes and e-mails that you pass along throughout the year, including story ideas and just telling us how much you enjoy reading the magazine are appreciated. Everyone here at Chicago Jazz Magazine and ChicagoJazz.com would like to wish you and your families a safe and healthy holiday season.
>b>Pianist Willie Pickens annual Christmas concert will be held Friday, December 16, at 8pm, at the Hyde Park Union Church, located at 5600 South Woodlawn Avenue in Chicago. Tao Tunes anyone?
Pianist/composer Dave Flippo’s newest recording project, Tao Tunes ( Oppilf Records ) is a jazz "first." The CD, performed by his ensemble Flippomusic, features 17 modern vocal jazz compositions that set adapted English lyrics of the ancient Chinese text the Tao Te Ching––something Flippo believes has never been done before. The band will celebrate the CD release at two different locations: Jerry’s Sandwich Shop in Wicker Park on Tuesday, November 6 (from 9:30-11:30pm––1928 West Division, Chicago), and on the North Side at C.J. Arthur’s in Wilmette, Sunday, November 27 (from 6:30-9:30 pm––1163 Wilmette Avenue, Wilmette). The CD goes on sale officially on CDBaby and Amazon November 27, but extensive clips of all the tunes are available at flippomusic.com.
Jazz Cartoons and “Hooliganism”
On Saturday, November 19, Chicago Jazz Magazine and AOL Patch cartoonist Charley Krebs and Irish American News columnist Mike Houlihan will hold court at Mollie’s Public House in Riverside to tell some stories, and to sign Charley’s posters and Mike’s book, Hooliganism. Both of these guys were radio stable mates at the old Avenue 950 where Krebs co-hosted This Is Chicago Jazz. The fun begins at 7pm with an exhibit of Charley’s Chicago Jazz Magazine artwork as well as music from guitarist Paul Halvey. Mollie’s, at 31 Forest Avenue in Riverside, is a cozy Irish pub with Guinness and other favorites on tap. They also serve food. Call (708) 447-2233 or log-on to molliespublichouse.com.
Chicago Jazz Magazine is happy to be sponsoring a new series called “Jazz on the Fox” every Thursday night at Bistro One West in St. Charles, Ill. The food and atmosphere are excellent, and the music, well it couldn’t be any better! Every Thursday night starting at 6 you can see and hear musicians from throughout the Chicago area. Sit at the bar or enjoy dinner. Visit bistro1west.com for more information.
The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective will sponsor a special concert to commemorate the group’s 10th year of presenting concerts on November 20 at the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway in Chicago, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. To celebrate, members of the Collective will perform new and favorite original compositions. lnspired by New York’s Jazz Composers Collective, the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective (CJCC) formed in 2001 and began presenting monthly concerts at the Green Mill, each featuring the work of two different jazz composers. Since then the CJCC has presented the music of over 50 composers with more than 140 Chicago area musicians performing. Guest composers have included well-known Chicago jazz musicians, such as Jim Gailloreto, John McLean, Geof Bradfield, Greg Ward and numerous up-and-comers.
Underground Wonder Bar reopening! Lonie Walker’s club, the Underground Wonder Bar, at 10 East Walton, was forced to close after over 21 years, when the building was torn down. Having tried several locations, Walker, founder and owner of this underground haven for live music, has found a permanent home for the Wonder Bar at 710 North Clark. The bar will consist of two rooms––one street level and, of course, an underground room. Lonie Walker will continue to support local musicians, expand her business, and celebrate even more artists. Visit UndergroundWonderBar.com for details.
The Chicago Jazz Ensemble (CJE) with Artistic Director Dana Hall has announced the inaugural Guest-Artist-In-Residence for its 2012 Louis Armstrong Legacy Program and Celebration (LALPC) will be trombonist, composer, and arranger Wycliffe Gordon. Gordon is the Jazz Journalists Association’s 2011 Trombonist of the Year and an internationally renowned music educator. The purpose of LALPC, the CJE’s signature education program now in its fifth year, is to send musicians from the Ensemble into nearly a dozen local schools each spring semester as mentors to share the artistic legacy of Louis Armstrong and jazz music in general.
CJE mentors work with teachers to enrich students’ musical and personal growth. During two one-week residencies, Gordon will work directly with students and educators in the Chicago Public Schools leading up to the program’s culmination on May 23-24, 2012, when the students give the public Celebration performance at the Chicago Cultural Center, demonstrating the progress they have made. What’s happening on the Internet? There are exciting things happening around the Internet these days, specifically on ChicagoJazz.com. Thanks to a recent server update we are now able to offer free websites to musicians throughout the Chicago area. It has been just over 11 years since ChicagoJazz.com was launched as a way to help promote Chicagoland jazz musicians, clubs, venues and organizations to the world. The messages we get on a daily basis from individuals and groups from around the world who are traveling to town or who are just interested in specific musicians is incredible.
The Musician’s Websites on ChicagoJazz.com enable people to look at pictures, listen to music, watch videos and read about individual musicians, creating a relationship between the jazz fan and the artist. So if you are a musician and you don’t have a website on ChicagoJazz.com yet, please sign up. And if you are a jazz fan I encourage you to visit ChicagoJazz.com and browse through the different websites hosted on the site. You might just find a new favorite Chicago jazz artist.
