In jazz festival settings with so many choices to select from (and with the individual tastes of the jazz fans so diverse and eclectic), the use of the term “headliners” has became passé. Thus, we shall attempt to pique your curiosity and interest by focusing upon limited opportunities and lack of proximity rather than “headliners”.

All of the musicians scheduled to perform at the festival in Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan reside in Michigan or Illinois. Thus, the opportunities to see these musicians are greater than if the musician lived in other states; such as One For All. All of the members of this hard bop cooperative group (Eric Alexander on tenor sax, Steve Davis on trombone, Jim Rotondi on trumpet, David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass and Jason Brown on drums) reside in New York or Connecticut.

During this decade, One For All has performed in Michigan twice. The last appearance was over two years ago at the Jazz Café in Detroit in January 2007. Legendary radio host Ed Love of WDET FM 101.9 plays tunes nightly on his program from their recent recording, The Return of the Lineup just as he has been playing their previous ten recordings throughout the years.

This group has played with everyone and everyone has played with them. It is one of the most energetic, exciting and talented groups performing today. Most of the members front their own groups and they enjoy the opportunities to perform collectively as one cohesive band; hence the name One For All.

The morning after their Saugatuck performances, Alexander, Davis and Hazeltine will catch a red eye flight out to California to attend a faculty meeting at 11:00 a.m. for the week long Stanford Jazz Workshop. Brown, Rotondi and Webber will return to New York on a “red eye” flight also on Sunday morning where Rotondi and Webber will leave for Spain that evening to perform with the New York All Stars.

Saugatuck is in luck! You can catch these great musicians at the festival before these globetrotters catch their respective planes. Please do not “wait” until their next appearance near you.

Tickets for the indoor venues are $20. Tickets for Coghlin Park are $40. Children under 15 are free. Discount packages are available. Tickets can be purchased online at www.s-djazz.com or (313) 965-0505.

Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged for Coghlin Park. No glass, grills or alcohol permitted in the park.

The Saugatuck-Douglas Jazz Festival is supported by the MICHIGAN COUNCIL FOR ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS and the NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
