Selected Six Area Public School Students to Attend
Jazz Camp July 14 - August 1 in New Orleans
CHICAGO, July 21, 2008 - Six students from Chicago Public Schools are enjoying the three-week Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp in New Orleans as the prize from the culminating event at the May 20 Louis Armstrong Legacy Program and Celebration (LALPC). In partnership with the Jazz Camp, Columbia College Chicago (CJE) sponsored the students, who are the first recipients to be chosen by Artistic Director Jon Faddis following the annual LALPC. All expenses were paid including airfare, room and board, and tuition for the camp, which runs July 14 through August 1. The LALPC is funded by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and the Polk Bros. Foundation.
Chicago participants are: Charlie Wiley, age 13, clarinet, and Kyle Swan, 14, trumpet, John Marshall Harlan Community Academic Center, (Band Director Kevin Korschgen); Methuselah Gee, 14, guitar, Arthur Dixon Elementary School (Band Director Diane Ellis); Damen Tolbert, 16, saxophone, and Ervin Harris, 15, trumpet, Morgan Park High School (Band Director Shemeka Nash); and Karina Alejandres, 15, flute, Hancock High School (Band Director Dennis Trainor).
The three-week music education program includes workshops and classes; a cook-out with a jazz jam for camp participants; a Jazz Camp Faculty Benefit Concert and Reception at Club 300 Jazz Bistro, 300 Rue Decatur, from 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm on July 30; and the Culminating Concert, which is free, open to the public and includes student performances with 2008 Artists-in-Residence George Duke and Norma Miller, on August 1 at 8:00 pm at the University of New Orleans Performing Arts Center. Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble designed the new LALPC to introduce and extend the musical legacy of the legendary trumpeter Louis Armstrong. The LALPC provided master classes; materials and resources, including transcriptions of Armstrong's music by Jon Faddis; Jazz Pedagogy manual by J. Richard Dunscomb of Columbia College Chicago and Dr. Willie Hill of University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Armstrong's "Portrait of a Young Artist" CD collection; Louis Armstrong Education Book; admission to Chicago Jazz Ensemble rehearsals and concerts; instruction from CJE mentors; the Master Class and a DVD of the group's performance and a program certificate.
