"A Power Stronger Than Itself: A History of the AACM" | Tuesday, April 15

George Lewis, composer, musician and author of A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music, talks about the rich history of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), an organization founded in Chicago in 1965. He will be joined by Nicole Mitchell and Douglas Ewart, the current leaders of the AACM. The three musicians will perform together afterwards. This event is co-produced by the Masters of Arts Administration and Policy Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center.

This one-of-a-kind band formed as an innovative project to combine free jazz, Afro-Cuban percussion, and electronics. They have broken down genre distinctions and have created an undeniably brilliant concoction. SLF continues on the paths of Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, and Art Ensemble of Chicago, creating new dimensions of folk art forms for tomorrow.
Jason Stein's Locksmith Isidore | Wednesday, April 30 at 7pm
Stein is able to explore the expressive and improvisational capabilities of the elusive bass clarinet, focusing on breaking down the boundaries of conventional composition in the trio setting. Jason Stein's trio Locksmith Isidore features Stein (bass clarinet), Jason Roebke (bass) and Mike Pride (drums).
