ETHS Celebrates 8th Annual Evanston Jazz Festival
February 5, 2011
FEATURING GUEST BASSIST MAURIZIO ROLLI JOINING
JEFF LINDBERG’S CHICAGO JAZZ ORCHESTRA IN A
TRIBUTE TO JACO PASTORIUS
The Evanston Township High School (ETHS) 8th Annual Evanston Jazz Festival welcomes Italian bassist Maurizio Rolli, who joins Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra to top off the festival with a tribute performance to the late, legendary bass player Jaco Pastorius.
Rolli, an award-winning bass player, composer, director, and music educator, is currently art director of the Italian jazz orchestra “Accademia Musicale Pescarese” which recorded “Moodswings,” a tribute to the music of Jaco Pastorius, with Michael Manring and Mike Stern. Rolli will perform with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Formerly known as the Jazz Members Big Band, the CJO has provided 30 years of excellent music in Chicago. Composed of Chicago’s top jazz musicians, the CJO has opened for the first Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979, toured Europe twice, and played with such artists as Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and Kurt Elling.
The evening performance begins at 7:30 p.m. with a set from ETHS’s own Jazz Ensemble, and will be held in the ETHS auditorium, 1600 Dodge Avenue in Evanston. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children, students with I.D., and seniors. All seats are reserved. Call (847) 424-7848 or visit www.ethsjazz.com to order tickets online.
The Evanston Jazz Festival is an all-day event focusing on educating high school and middle school jazz students and showcasing their talents. The festival attracts more than 400 student musicians from school bands around the Midwest. Past festivals have drawn school bands from as far away as Winnipeg, Canada.
Last year, over 40 bands and combos from over 17 schools participated in the event.
The Festival is open to the public and offers a full day of non-competitive, educational workshops and performances by middle school and high school jazz groups. Each band or combo has the opportunity to perform and then receives both live and recorded feedback and coaching from two expert judges. Other activities include a variety of workshops, clinics, and master classes offered by jazz musicians and educators; a special workshop on computer music technology; and a noontime concert by the “Shades of Blue” Air Force Jazz Band of the Midwest.
“The students have a great day listening to the other groups and spending time with jazz professionals,” says Dr. David Fodor, director of bands at ETHS and the Festival’s founder and director. As Dr. Fodor points out, what makes the festival so meaningful and rewarding is that “true jazz experts come here and provide substantive, constructive feedback for the student musicians.”
The ETHS music department has more than 400 students in bands, choirs, orchestras, small ensembles, and jazz groups.
ETHS student groups have won two Downbeat music awards, and the music program is a three-time Grammy Signature School Winner, most recently as one of only 14 schools nationwide to receive this prestigious award for 2009. The ETHS music department takes students on semi-annual trips, which over the past few years have included Montreal, New York, Orlando, New Orleans and Nashville. ETHS has an extensive jazz program, including nine jazz combos and three jazz big bands. For the past two years the school’s top jazz ensemble has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival and other venues around the Chicago area.
