Do not miss these special pre-festival events on Tuesday, November 1st, as artists arrive in town for the sixth annual UMBRELLA MUSIC FESTIVAL, November 2nd-6th.
Dubbed by the Chicago Reader "the most impressive and adventurous jazz event of the year," the Umbrella Music Festival features cutting-edge jazz and improvised music from around the world, with a particular focus on artists from the diverse, cooperative, and thriving local scene. These special events will help to kickoff the week's festivities.

Don't miss the North American premier of the feature-length documentary on legendary German reedist Peter Brotzmann, a major contributor to the current Chicago aesthetic in free-improvised music, and a regular collaborator with many Chicago musicians. Brotzmann's importance as one of the major figures of European creative music over the last 50 years can't be overstated, and this understated film by director Bernard Josse does a fantastic job of letting the artist describe himself in his own words. Don't miss this premier event, a pre-party for the 2011 Umbrella Music Festival.

A fantastic first time pairing of British reed wizard John Butcher and Chicago bassist Jason Roebke promises to explore the subtle territories of sound of which both musicians are masters. This intimate house concert is presented by our friends at the Monday night Ratchet Series, normally hosted at the Skylark.

Bass virtuoso and former Chicago resident Devin Hoff returns to town for a performance as part of the Umbrella Music Festival with the Tim Berne Trio at Elastic on Friday, November 4th, and takes this pre-fest opportunity to reunite with a working trio that pairs him with Umbrella organizers Rempis and Reed. Formed during his tenure in Chicago, this will be the group's first performance since Hoff left town last July.
UMBRELLA MUSIC is a group of Chicago musicians and presenters working to provide performance opportunities for creative and improvising musicians. UMBRELLA members produce weekly concert series on Wednesdays at the Hideout, Thursdays at Elastic, and Sundays at the Hungry Brain.
