New Orleans’ foremost contemporary jazz ensemble Astral Project returns to the Green Mill Jazz Club, 4802 N. Broadway, on Friday, September 18, performing from 9PM until 1AM, and Saturday, September 19, performing from 8PM until midnight.
Formed by leader Tony Dagradi, Astral Project members include a diverse group of highly regarded jazz musicians/composers with Dagradi on tenor and soprano saxophones, Steve Masakowski on guitar, James Singleton on bass, and John Vidacovich on drums.
There is fluidity to Astral Project that comes from playing together for 30 years. Formed in 1978, the band has continued to grow and explore new musical territories. Each musician has won numerous accolades for being the best at their instrument (Offbeat Magazine, Best of the Best).
Together, the band has won numerous “best of” awards including OffBeat Magazine Best of the Beat Readers Poll for Best Modern Jazz Group, and always achieves critical acclaim. For them, music is a group search for a higher plane of understanding. It is not about formality or classicism, musical boundaries or some subjective dogma on what constitutes “real” jazz.
