Back to bass-ics: Victor Wooten returns to ECC Oct. 9
Grammy-winning bassist Victor Wooten is bringing his brand of funk, jazz and other sonic surprises back to Elgin Community College’s Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 9. Wooten will perform with drummer J.D. Blair at 7:30 p.m. at the ECC Arts Center’s Blizzard Theatre on the Main Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
Armed with a bass since childhood, Wooten has become a tour de force with his instrument of choice. He’s a three-time winner of the “Bass Player of the Year” award from Bass Player Magazine and has won Grammys as a member of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. Wooten continues to build upon his bass skills as a solo artist, in addition to composing, arranging, producing, singing and experimenting with other instruments.
Wooten has recorded and performed with artists like Branford Marsalis, Mike Stern, Bruce Hornsby, Chick Corea, Dave Matthews and Prince. His 2008 recording Palmystery is a genre-bending eclecticism that embraces a range of styles—jazz, funk, pop, soul, gospel, world music and more—and boasts a diverse guest list that includes Mike Stern, Richard Bona, Keb’ Mo’ and others.
Known as "The Groove Regulator," Blair frequently collaborates with Wooten. His drum and percussion work can be heard on projects with gospel artists Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans and Yolanda Adams; jazz saxaphonist Kirk Whalum; and funk pioneer Bootsy Collins. Blair’s solo work brings a mix of funk, soul and a penchant for the unusual—which are on full display on his latest release 3hree.
Tickets are $35 and $32. A three-course, pre-show gourmet dinner prepared by students of ECC’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Institute of Elgin can be purchased for an additional $35. Dinners include wine and must be purchased in advance on or before Monday, Oct. 4.
