JazzCity: Bebop Blast!
Bebop Brass Plus!
Friday, March 11, 2011 - 7:00pm
LaFollette Park
1333 N. Laramie
Chicago, IL 60651
Bebop Brass is a band of rotating brass masters that consistently features new writing by Chicago’s top composers. Trumpets include Victor Garcia, Corey Wilkes, and Odies “Doc” Williams with trombonists Audrey Morrison, Norman Palm and Jeb Bishop. Band leader pianist Ken Chaney leads the charge with Ernie Adams on drums and Josh Ramos on bass. The velvet-voiced Saalik Ziyad provides the plus!
Annually, for the past 14 years, we have gathered the City’s top brass players to form a nonet led by pianist Ken Chaney who conceived of the notion of Bebop Brass. The first Bebop Brass concert was a three hour history of the Chicago brass sound from the early part of the 20th century to the late 90s, when the band debuted. Since then, each year has offered the opportunity for established and emerging artists to work together, and in many cases to write and perform new compositions. One early grouping included then 18 year-old trumpeter Maurice Brown with Malachi Thompson and rising star Orbert Davis. Trombonist T.S. Galloway was commissioned to write a suite for the first outing of the band and went on to pen many new arrangements for Bebop Brass over the years.
Band leader Ken Chaney’s commitment has sustained this concept for over a decade, and it has become a gig that the musicians around town really look forward to. When Victor Garcia got the call for this gig from Mr. Chaney he said he was delighted and honored. Garcia first heard the band when he was a teenage trumpeter, and duly inspired, has gone on to achieve substantial recognition for his creative chops. For many, it’s a chance to play with people they don’t normally encounter, creating new possibilities for musical relationships to take root.
