Boogie woogie is coming to the the Green Mill, in the form of Carl Sonny Leyland, one of the world's leading authorities on blues and boogie woogie piano and a master of all styles from New Orleans, traditional jazz, swing, and Kansas City boogie to rockin' rhythm and blues. Chicago’s own purveyors of Americana, Joel Paterson and The Modern Sounds (Joel Paterson on guitar, Beau Sample on bass, and Alex Hall on drums) will be right beside Leyland, celebrating the Ventrella Records release of their two-CD set “Hold it Fellas…It’s The Modern Sounds” (blues and rockabilly) and “Stomp Stomp” (jazz and blues).
Carl Sonny Leyland has the boogie in his bones. Hearing him play takes one back to the rent parties and lowdown back alley juke joints of the early part of the 20th century. As a youth in Southampton, England, Leyland became fascinated by the rhythm and sounds of boogie woogie piano. Inspired by a friend’s attempt at playing J. D.'s Boogie Woogie, he immersed himself in the driving sounds created by Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis. Quickly becoming adept at the instrument, he also absorbed the heart and passion of blues piano legends. In 1988 he settled in New Orleans, where he absorbed the styles of New Orleans traditional jazz, ragtime, and swing, giving these styles his own personal interpretation.
