Cassandra Wilson, 2009 Grammy Award Winner for Best Jazz Vocal Album will perform on Friday, September 25 at the University of Chicago’s Rockefeller Chapel at 8:00 p.m. With her unmistakable honeyed husky voice, she will kick off the Hyde Park Jazz Festival which begins on Saturday, September 26 with world-class headliners and local emerging artists performing at neighborhood venues in Hyde Park for 15 hours of non-stop jazz!
In addition, Ms. Wilson will conduct a two-week workshop with Kenwood Academy high school students. The workshops are designed to expose students to the process of creating an original work of music and translating it into a performance. The students will examine the basic elements that go into constructing a piece of music such as melody, harmony, rhythm and lyrics. The students will be guided through the creative process by Ms. Wilson and her team and will perform with them the evening of the concert.
The project is an initiative of Ifa Yoruba Contemporary Arts Foundation (IYCAF), where Ms. Wilson serves as a founding member. IYCAF is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization and classified as a public charity. Its mission is to promote the development of Yoruba arts in the African Diaspora.
