AT THE Jay Pritzker Pavilion IN MILLENNIUM PARK

Thursday, July 31, 6:30 pm; Free admission

"Chicago, get ready for some heart-throbbing, hot Latin sounds!"

James Walker, Jazzchicago.net

On Thursday, July 31 at 6:30 pm, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Millennium Park presents the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, performing as part of the Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz series, which highlights jazz from Chicago, Central America, the Middle East and beyond. This is the second concert in the series, which consists of six admission-free concerts at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.

The Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble (CALJE) was formed in efforts to fuse the musical treasures of Afro-Latin American music and Jazz.

The band has a strong foundation in Afro-Cuban Jazz, Brazilian, and Jazz Fusion, which it then blends with Flamenco, Central American and Peruvian folk rhythms. With its culturally diverse background, CALJE is deeply committed to the evolution and preservation of Latin music. Artists in the band have had the opportunity to share the stage with legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Chick Corea, The Temptations, Paquito D Rivera and Danilo Perez, among others. Founded by Mexican trumpeter/composer Victor Garcia and Nicaraguan pianist/composer Darwin Alejandro Noguera, the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble made its debut by kicking off the Midwest Jazz en Clave Latin Jazz Festival at Chicago s former HotHouse, alongside the Grammy Award nominated drummer Dafnis Prieto s Quintet, Canadian soprano saxophonist and flutist Jane Bunnett and virtuoso violinist Alfredo de la Fe.
