The Chicago Jazz Ensemble (CJE) with Artistic Director Dana Hall has announced the inaugural Guest-Artist-In-Residence for its 2012 Louis Armstrong Legacy Program and Celebration (LALPC) will be trombonist, composer, and arranger Wycliffe Gordon. Gordon is the Jazz Journalists Association’s 2011 Trombonist of the Year and an internationally renowned music educator. The purpose of LALPC, the CJE’s signature education program now in its fifth year, is to send musicians from the Ensemble into nearly a dozen local schools each spring semester as mentors to share the artistic legacy of Louis Armstrong and jazz music in general.
CJE mentors work with teachers to enrich students’ musical and personal growth. During two one-week residencies, Gordon will work directly with students and educators in the Chicago Public Schools leading up to the program’s culmination on May 23-24, 2012, when the students give the public Celebration performance at the Chicago Cultural Center, demonstrating the progress they have made.
