Good news! We have just finalized the contract with the city of Chicago to once again publish the 2011 official program book for the Chicago Jazz Festival. Since we started publishing the program back in 2003 we have been able to produce a program book that is handed out at the festival free-of-charge. For the past few years, the program has been in a beautiful glossy format. Another returning feature at the fest is live music in the Chicago Jazz Magazine booth, with performances by local Chicago jazz musicians. The performance schedule will be announced mid-summer on ChicagoJazz.com.

Although the entire music schedule for the festival has yet to be announced, the initial performance line-up for this year’s 2011 Chicago Jazz Festival has been released. With ex-Mayor Daley’s failed attempts to privatize the festivals, the planning committee had a very late start on lining up musicians. As a result, this year’s festival, the 33rd annual, will again be free to the public.

The 2011 Chicago Jazz Festival is September 1-4, with Thursday and Friday evening concerts in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, and all-day performances Saturday and Sunday in Grant Park. This year’s festival Artist-in-Residence is composer, conductor, educator and jazz trumpeter, Orbert Davis. Davis will be performing with his Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, sit in on several other performances throughout the weekend and debut a new piece that has been commissioned for the festival.

Other announced performances include the “Saxophone Summit” featuring Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman and Ravi Coltrane, Friday night at the Pritzker Pavilion. Performing Saturday night in Grant Park will be vocalist Cassandra Wilson, while Sunday night’s headliner is Roy Hargrove. The full schedule will be posted on ChicagoJazz.com, when it is released.
