The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic (CJP) will open its new concert season on Saturday, November 14th at 7:30pm in the International House of University of Chicago. This performance, entitled “Strings and Things that Swing: The New Third Stream,” will debut the newly created Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble and will feature thirteen of the orchestra’s brightest stars.

“The idea of presenting this chamber group is a very exciting one,” says Artistic Director, Orbert Davis. “This new group gives us the opportunity to dig deep into the aesthetics of merging classical music and jazz, while preserving an emphasis on the art of improvisation. And, while developing new concepts in modern music, we’re able to maintain the unique CJP brand of presenting music of the Third Stream.”

Third Stream is a term coined in 1957 by composer Gunther Schuller to describe a musical genre which is a synthesis of classical music and jazz. Improvisation, a key element of jazz, but far less common in classical music – is generally seen as a vital component of Third Stream.
In keeping with CJP’s unique artistic mission, repertoire will include works that demonstrate how jazz and classical can indeed fuse, creating a new genre. The new CJP Chamber Ensemble will present works by Bill Russo, Al Cohn, Mozart and of course, Orbert Davis — plus works from the classic ‘jazz with strings’ performances of Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown.

A pre-concert gala reception will give exclusive opportunities for guests to “meet the artists.” To round out the evening, Davis and members of the ensemble will facilitate a post concert discussion from the stage.
General Admission tickets are $20 each ($15 for students) and can be purchased online by visiting www.chijazzphil.org/tickets.

Tickets for the pre-concert “meet the artists” gala reception (also available online) are $150 each and includes preferred seating for the performance. General admission tickets will also be sold at the door beginning at 6:30pm.

Funding and Support for Chicago Jazz Philharmonic’s new concert season is made possible by the following corporate and civic organizations – The Joyce Foundation, the Illinois Arts Council, The Global Voices Program for Performing Arts at International House, and the Boeing Company.
