With the new found push to provide live music for Chicago weddings during cocktails and dinner and then transition to a DJ for the reception music there are some logistics you need to consider.
I am always an advocate of live music at an event. It gives the event, whether it is a wedding, corporate reception, private party , etc. a touch of class and also that feeling of, the hosts went out of their way to make this a special occasion.
However sometimes you just can’t find the right band that will play all the tunes you and your guests enjoy. So in recent years there has been a trend to hire a jazz trio, jazz quartet or even a jazz vocalist to perform the music that Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat Cole and others made famous during the cocktail and dinner hour and then transition over to a DJ for the dance reception portion of the evening.
Here are some samples of the different groups that I have worked with during cocktails and dinner.
Chicago Jazz Trio
Chicago Jazz Quartet
This is actually a great idea because now you can keep your older guests happy with some live music that doesn’t overwhelm them with volume and then later in the evening the younger guests can get up and dance to the D.J. However if you are planning on doing something like this you just want to keep a few things in mind when you are scheduling the evening.
Where is the jazz group going to be setup during the cocktails and dinner portion of the evening?
This is essential because if the cocktail portion of your wedding is going to be in another part of the reception venue the band will need to have enough room to comfortably move into position without disrupting your guests and making a scene.
How will the jazz group exit the area you are having your dinner in without causing a major disruption?
It is best to look at the layout of the hall and see if there is a way for the group to move their instruments out of the hall and then pack up the instruments. By doing this it not only helps to make the transition from the live entertainment to the DJ smoothly it also looks much better to your guests.
Who will be announcing the wedding party?
Having the jazz group perform for cocktails and dinner will definetley make your wedding more classy and memorable but keep in mind if you have a jazz trio or quartet perform they may not have a PA system available for announcements. I always ask the different clients I work with if I will be doing the announcement of the wedding party or if the DJ will be providing that. It is just something to think about when you are planning your wedding reception.
I hope this information is helpful in you planning your reception. After all it is your special day and if you hire the right jazz group and good D.J. you are sure to have a wonderful stress free day.
