“In essence, Valdes and his band reinvigorated age-old Cuban musical forms, the venerable cha-cha-cha and mambo standards revitalized by the muscular virtuosity of a mostly younger generation of players. This was jazz improvisation of the most sophisticated kind, with arcane chord changes and unexpected bursts of dissonance at almost every turn.”
– Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune
“In terms of pure flamboyance, Chuchito…can raise a mountain of rhythmic intensity with a driving montuno, create flutelike filigrees in his fluttering right hand figures, or stagger flashing chords at breakneck speed to build a kaleidoscopic improvisation.” – Neil Tesser, Chicago Reader
The exciting quintet Chuchito Valdes Afro-Cuban Ensemble once again will fire up the stage at the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway, on Friday, January 29, from 9PM until 1AM and Saturday, January 30, from 8PM until midnight. Pianist Chuchito Valdes will lead Kenny Anderson on trumpet, Jonathon Paul on bass, Frankie Ocasio on congas, and Ruben Alvarez on drums.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Valdes comes from one of the most distinguished musical families of Cuba. He studied Cuban music, classical and jazz piano extensively with many Cuban masters including his father, Chucho Valdes. As composer and arranger, Valdes writes Afro-Cuban originals and arranges jazz standards and traditional Cuban dance classics for this ensemble. His recording, “La Timba”, is a compilation of traditional Afro-Cuban, Son and Timba music.
His CD, "Encantado," mixes many musical styles -¬ American jazz, Cuban son and folkloric tunes, and Cuban dance music. The result is a record that is hard to beat with Latin as well as American jazz influences. The band performs internationally, including dates at the International Havana Jazz Festival.
