Contempo's 2011/2012 season launches with its 8th annual double bill at the Harris Theater on Tuesday, November 15. The first set features new music performed by Grammy-winning ensembles eighth blackbird and Pacifica Quartet. The second set headlines world-class jazz pianist/composer HIROMI: THE TRIO PROJECT with Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips.
During the first set, special guest pianist Amy Briggs will perform three tangos for solo piano by composers Conlon Nancarrow, Frederic Rzewski, and Ralph Shapey. University of Chicago Ensemble-in-Residence Pacifica Quartet will perform the US premiere of post Soviet composer Elena Firsova's lush String Quartet No.4, IIAmoroso". And rounding out the set is Ensemble-in-Residence eighth blackbird, joined by the youth chorus Anima, who will perform the Chicago premiere of How Soon by Nico Muhly. Commissioned by eighth blackbird, Anima and the Kennesaw State University School of Music, this powerful work is a setting of 17th-century poet George Herbert's Mortification. eighth blackbird will also perform the Chicago premiere of Steven Stucky's Ad Parnassum, a ravishing musical
interpretation of Paul Klee's masterpiece by the same name.
The second set of the double bill headlines HIROMI: THE TRIO PROJECT with bassist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips (The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour, Jack Bruce). Says Jazz Around Town, "Hiromi is one of the most remarkable pianists of the past half century. While her recordings display brilliance, one has to see her live to truly appreciate her remarkable virtuosity, constant creativity and utter joy at playing .... "
Now in its 47th year, Contempo remains the vanguard of adventurous new programming at the cutting edge. Under Artistic Director Shulamit Ran, Contempo introduces audiences to the bold visions of today's most innovative composers.
