The robust, hard-swinging baritone saxophonist David Schumacher and soulful tenor saxophonist/composer Jerry Weldon will team up to present their annual November weekend performances at the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway, on Friday, November 7, from 9PM until 1AM and Saturday, November 8, from 8PM to midnight.
Dan Trudell will play the Hammond B-3 organ, and Isaiah Spencer will be on drums.
As a freelance musician, Chicago native David Schumacher has been active on the New York scene for the past 20 years. As a member of Lionel Hampton's Orchestra, he toured the Americas and Europe through much of the 1980s. He is an original member of Harry Connick, Jr.'s Orchestra and has also toured with Art Blakey, T.S. Monk, and the Tom Harrell Octet. Schumacher is a two-time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Performance Grant (1989 & 1995).
Jerry Weldon's combination of bebop vocabulary, strong sense of swing, and expressive personality have always made for a heady mix. He has served as tenor saxist in the Lionel Hampton Big Band, followed by his run with Jack McDuff, and then Harry Connick, Jr.'s Big Band. Currently, he is a member of Joey DeFrancesco’s working band and leader of his own New York City ensembles.
