World-Class Jazz – Chicago and the Czech Republic
A Special Two-Night Engagement arranged with the support of the Consul General of the Czech Republic
June 2nd & 3rd @ Club BluJazz

On June 2nd and 3rd, two of the world’s finest jazz talents will meet for a Jazz Summit at Chicago’s newest jazz spot – Club BluJazz.

Emil Viklicky, world-renowned pianist from the Czech Republic and Richie Cole, one of the world’s finest be-bop saxophonists will appear together with some of Chicago’s finest musicians.

The “Janacek of Jazz,”Emil Viklicky, in his first Chicago appearance with the legendary Richie Cole. JazzTimes calls Viklick “one of the best contemporary pianists.” Richie Cole is “the last of a breed—a fast and competitive musical gunslinger acquiring near-legendary status for his willingness to demonstrate his command of Charlie Parker's bebop language—Billy the Kid packing an alto instead of a revolver.”

These two jazz legends will be joined by three exciting members of Chicago’s new generation of jazz players. Baritone saxophonist, Ted Hogarth, local drumming favorite Ernie Adams, and the up and coming young bass player Aaron Mitter. A truly exciting musical combination.

The music will also be an exciting combination – with originals by Cole and Viklicky – plus jazz standards associated with Gerry Mulligan. “The Chicago audience will be treated to some of the world’s best jazz playing” notes Marek Skolil, Chicago’s Consul General for the Czech Republic, a key sponsor of this unique musical event.

The group will perform Wednesday and Thursday, June 2nd and 3rd, at the brand new Club BluJazz, 1540 W. North Avenue, conveniently located just West of the Kennedy Expressway’s North Avenue exit and, just East of Ashland.
Showtimes are at 8:00 and 9:45 pm. Tickets are just $10. For reservations, call 773-360-8046 or go to www.clubblujazz.com.

More about Emil Viklicky. A long list of awards includes international competitions and a scholarship to the Berkleee School of Music. He was President of the Czech Jazz Society, and has worked to combine elements of Moravian folk music, modern jazz and contemporary classical. In the Czech Republic, he is known as “the Janacek of jazz.” His performances have taken him around the world working with other world-class musicians.

More about Richie Cole. From his earliest days with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich, to his work with the legendary jazz vocalist Eddie Jefferson and the Manhattan Transfer, Richie Cole has kept the flag of be-bop flying. A graduate of Berklee School of Music, his talent is matched with a dedication to service and education. He was appointed to the Board of the National Jazz Service Organization, and the Board for the National Endowment for the Arts where he served as chairman for one year. He is also a long time member of the International Association of Jazz Educators adding clinics and teaching to his worldwide schedule of appearances at clubs, concerts, and festivals.

More about Ted Hogarth. Ted is a member of Jeru, the Michael Ingersoll Band and Orbert Davis’s Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. He has recorded three records and is on a dozen recordings by Chicago artists.

More about Ernie Adams. On the faculty of the UIC College of the Performing Arts, Ernie Adams is one of Chicago’s favorite drummers. He has performed

The editor of Rolling Stone wrote of Viklicky that “It was a delightful surprise to see such first-class, top-of-the-line jazz in Prague.”
”One of the best contemporary pianists, Viklicky's soloing and comping, his touch, voicings and intervals have a good deal in common with fleet, tasteful pianists like Tommy Flanagan, Jimmy Rowles and Bill Charlap.”
--Doug Ramsey, JazzTimes
