GUITAR VIRTUOSO FAREED HAQUE WILL KICK-OFF CHICAGO PHILHARMONICS 2011-2012 SYMPHONIC SEASON ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2

The Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to announce a robust lineup of programming for its 22nd season. On Sunday, October 2 at 7 p.m. Brazilian-born Lucia Matos joins guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque for an evening of mesmerizing Spanish and Pan American works, including two stunning guitar concerti: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Villa-Lobos’ Guitar Concerto. Also on the program are Villa-Lobos’ Sinfonietta No. 1 and De Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat.

The Concierto de Aranjuez, written in 1939, was Joaquin Rodrigo’s best-known work. Inspired by the gardens at Palacio Real de Aranjuez in Spain, Rodrigo described the concerto itself as capturing “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains” in the gardens of Aranjuez. Heitor Villa-Lobos composed the Guitar Concerto for Andres Segovia in 1951. Villa-Lobos is described as the single most significant creative figure in 20th century Brazilian art music. His Sinfonietta No. 1 was composed in 1916 “in memory of Mozart”. The first performance of the full work was in 1955 in Vienna. The Three-Cornered Hat is a ballet composed by Manuel de Falla in 1919. The story is about a magistrate who has become infatuated with a miller’s faithful wife and his attempts to seduce her. The story itself has been filmed several times, usually in Spanish.

Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque is renowned for bringing classical and jazz styles to his jam band collaborations, including, but not limited to, those with Paquito D’Rivera, Dave Holland, Sting, Joe Henderson, Lester Bowie, Arturo Sandoval, Robert Walter, Keller Williams, Medeski, Martini and Wood, Kahil el Zabar, Defunckt, Ramsey Lewis, Gabe Noel, Edo Castro and more recently with George Brooks on “Summit” and Garaj Mahal. Haque received the “Most Valuable Player” award at the 2002 High Sierra Music Festival. He is now a professor of Jazz and Classical Guitar Studies at Northern Illinois University.

Brazilian-born conductor Lucia Matos has appeared with numerous orchestras in the United States, Brazil and across Europe. She has recorded a CD featuring Andrea Gullickson and the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. Matos is currently Music Director of the Northern Illinois University Philharmonic and Opera Theater and was recently appointed Music Director of the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra.

On Sunday, November 13 at 7 p.m., the 2011/2012 season will continue when conductor and former first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet Joel Smirnoff will conduct Aaron Copland’s elegant Quiet City for English Horn, Trumpet and Strings featuring Charles Geyer, Trumpet and Judith Lewis, English Horn. Pianist Meng-Chieh Liu will follow with a performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s breathtaking Piano Concerto No. 1. Tchaikovsky’s inspiring Serenade for Strings in C Major will complete the evening’s program titled Smirnoff Conducts Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Copland.

Speck-tacular Beethoven & Rare Works for Tuba and Viola will be featured on Sunday, April 22 at 7 p.m. when conducting sensation Scott Speck leads the Chicago Philharmonic in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and the Fedalio Overture along with rare works for Viola and Tuba including Max Bruch’s Romance for Viola and Orchestra featuring CPO Principal Viola Keith Conant. Completing this program of rare works is CPO Principal Tuba Rex Martin performing Vaughn-Williams Tuba Concerto.

The Romantic Violin, on Sunday, May 20 at 7 p.m., promises to be a powerful season-ender when CPO Conductor and Music Director Larry Rachleff returns to conduct Dvorak’s entrancing Symphony No. 8 and Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Violin Concerto featuring CPO Concertmaster David Perry.
