Gene Puerling, baritone, master vocal arranger and leader of the Hi-Lo's and Singers Unlimited, died of complications from diabetes on March 26. The Hi-Lo's (the name emphasized both the incredible vocal range of the band, as well as the disparate heights of the members of the four-man group) formed in Hollywood in 1953 and performed until 1964, recording over a dozen albums. Periodically the group performed together in the seventies, eighties and nineties. In the late sixties, Puerling formed a new quartet—Chicago-based a capella group, Singers Unlimited—to record advertising jingles. Fifteen albums later, Singers Unlimited was a worldwide success. Puerling's arrangements and his groups' flawless harmonies have impressed and influenced everyone from Bing Crosby to Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Puerling was awarded a Grammy in 1982 for Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices for his arrangement of "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," which was performed by The Manhatten Transfer, an a capella vocal quartet heavily influenced by Puerling.
