GREG OSBY FIVE
FRIDAY & SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 & 30, 2008
"One of the leading alto saxophonists in jazz, Osby pushes the mainstream about as far as it will go." - Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune
Agile, meticulous alto saxophonist Greg Osby will return to Chicago to play his annual much-anticipated shows at the Green Mill Jazz Club, 4802 N. Broadway, on Friday, August 29, from 9PM until 1AM and on Saturday, August 30, from 8PM until midnight. Osby's band will include Mike Pinto on vibes, Adam Birnbaum on piano, Joseph LePore on bass, and Hamir Atwul on drums.
Saxophonist, composer, producer, and educator Greg Osby has made an indelible mark on contemporary jazz as a leader of his own ensembles and as a guest artist with other acclaimed jazz groups for the past 20 years. Notable for his insightful and innovative approach to composition and performance of original jazz music, Osby is a shining beacon among the
current generation of jazz musicians. He has earned numerous awards and critical acclaim for his recorded works and passionate live performances.
In 1983 Osby began working in New York with jazz innovators Muhal Richard Abrams, Andrew Hill and Jack DeJohnette. In the early 1990s he was associated with the M-Base movement, which helped many young musicians build their names and talents in the jazz world. Osby's work was noticeable for
its edgy originality and challenging mixes of jazz and poetry and jazz and hip-hop. He then moved on to straight-ahead jazz, where he continues to
make his mark today.
