Jazz vocalist Janice Borla will be featured in concert at North Central College on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is another in the Jazz Faculty Concert Series, which showcases various members of the College's esteemed Jazz Studies Program. Joining Borla will be guitarist John McLean, pianist Frank Caruso, bassist Larry Kohut and drummer Jack Mouse. The performance will be presented in the spectacular, newly-opened Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Avenue.

Borla’s recordings and performances have earned her consistently high praise for her beautiful sound, adventurous repertoire and imaginative vocal improvisations. Her current CD release From Every Angle received a coveted "4-star" review in DownBeat, who named it one of the "Best CDs of 2007." Jazz Times praised her work as "Genius. Pure genius." Borla's previous CD Agents of Change was named "#1 Jazz CD of the Year" by WBEZ-FM Chicago Public Radio. She and her group are presently members of the Illinois Arts Council Artist Roster.

A recognized pioneer in vocal jazz education, she founded the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp and the "Hot Jazz - 6 Cool Nites" concert series presented at North Central College each July. As Director of Vocal Jazz at NCC, Borla maintains a busy applied jazz voice studio and directs the Vocal jazz Lab Ensemble. She has written articles forDownBeat and the Jazz Education Journal, and conducts vocal jazz clinics online through the ALIVE Project (Accessible Live Internet Video Education).

Jack Mouse, coordinator of the College's Jazz Studies Program, says of the concert series, "We have conceived this series of informal concerts as an opportunity for audiences, particularly young people, to be able to hear world-class professional jazz artists at an affordable price without having to travel into the city or cope with the underage restrictions typical of many jazz venues." The series will feature trumpeter Doug Scharf on March 11 and trombonist T.S. Galloway on April 15.

Admission to the concert is $15.00 general admission and $12.00 for students and senior citizens. To purchase tickets, go to www.finearts.northcentralcollege.edu or contact the NCC Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469).
