Jazz Radio is alive and well on Chicago radio stations. While it may not be as easy as it once was-even with the many Internet and Cable alternatives-there is jazz in the Chicago area on radio stations WDCB, WHPK, WKKC, WNUA and WNUR.
One of the least known, more adventurous jazz programming comes from WNUR, which broadcasts jazz and creative music each weekday morning from 5 am to 12:30 pm. The WNUR Jazz Show plays "classic" improvisers such as Albert Ayler, Malachi Favors, Steve Lacy, and Sun Ra as well as turning listeners on to new releases from creative musicians such as Fred Anderson, Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble, Hamid Drake, Kidd Jordan, William Parker, Dave Rempis and Ken Vandermark. WNUR broadcasts live from the shore of Lake Michigan on the Evanston campus of Northwestern University within the casting searchlight of the historic Grosse Pointe Lighthouse on 89.3 FM and wnur.org.
Chicago Jazz Magazine's very own volunteer copy editor Andy Pierce is one of the many talented hosts of the WNUR Jazz Show. He hosts a portion of the show on Thursday mornings, from 5 to 7:30 am, focusing on new releases, undisputed classic heavyweights and Chicago musicians who play jazz and creative music in Chicago venues. Pierce closes each show with a weekly jazz calendar which calls out the players and venues important to the Chicago improvisational music scene. "Enjoying music is like smoking a cigar or eating pie," Pierce said in an interview. "You can talk about it and read magazines about it and look at the Internet all you want. But eventually you have to smoke it, or eat a slice to have any idea what is really about."
"The best thing you can do for the continuity of the art and the livelihoods of the musicians and clubs is get out and go as often as possible," Pierce added. "If we think about it less and turn on the radio or get out the door to a club more often, then a lot more fun will be had. You can at any time listen to talk on NPR and stay safely at home. But what transcendent experience is that going to encourage? Listening to jazz on the radio at home or going to a club is the good thing we need to do for ourselves. It helps to listen deeply and breathe in something new." The WNUR Phoneathon 2008 begins at midnight on Thursday, Feb. 21 and ends at midnight on Thursday, Feb. 28.
