Pianist, composer, arranger Jean-Michel Pilc will bring his trio to the Green Mill Jazz Club, 4802 N. Broadway, on Friday, May 14, from 9PM until 1AM and Saturday, May 15, from 8PM until midnight. Bassist Boris Kozlov and drummer Billy Hart complete the trio. This engagement is in support of the group’s new CD, “True Story” (Dreyfus Jazz).

Since moving to New York City from France in the mid-90s, the self-taught Pilc has cemented his reputation as a brilliant musician. He has worked with David Liebman, Michael Brecker, John Abercrombie, and as Harry Belafonte’s musical director. In 2000 Pilc received the prestigious Django Reinhardt Prize from the French Academy of Jazz, an honor bestowed upon the “best French jazz musician of the year”. Last year he received, for the second time, a New Works: Creation and Presentation Grant from Chamber Music America. The new project has been the writing and performance of “Modern Lights”, a piece reflecting Charles Chaplin's work and inspired by his movies.

The gifted pianist is praised for his masterful technique, idiosyncratic rhythmic invention, and harmonic sophistication. Pilc’s highly impressionistic take on oft-recorded jazz standards like Autumn Leaves, along with audacious extrapolations on familiar themes like St. Louis Blues, show a depth of imagination and a sense of playful discovery that distinguish him as one of the most potent and adventurous pianists on the jazz scene today.
