World-renowned multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan will join the Jim Cooper Sextet for a celebration of Delmark Records’ re-release of the 1992 recording “Nutville” at the Green Mill
(4802 N. Broadway) on Friday, May 28, from 9PM until 1AM. Ira Sullivan (saxophones, flute, trumpet) will perform with vibist Jim Cooper, pianist Bob Dogan, bassist Dan DeLorenzo, drummer Bob Rummage, and Alejo Povedo on percussion.
Jazz vibist Jim Cooper's second Delmark CD, Nutville, was originally issued in 1992 and received glowing reviews: “...a warm wind blowing out of the Windy City, a suave mainstream session highlighted by solid solo work from the vibist with multi-instrumentalist bravura by Ira Sullivan” (Down Beat), “...the vibist establishes a strong claim to be the Thelonious Monk of his instrument... then Cooper shows off substantial symmetry and lyricism on ballads as well as a real affinity for the Latin tinge” (Cadence).
The self-taught Ira Sullian, at 79, reigns supreme as a multi-instrumentalist. He toured in the late 1950s with Art Blakey, is on 90 solo and session recordings with some of jazz’s legends (Charlie Parker, Nat Adderley, Dexter Gordon), and has influenced many with his unorthodox methods of teaching (preferring to be considered a “nurturer”, not an academician).
