Bassist John Bany was recently awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Elkhart Jazz Festival for his outstanding contribution to the festival. Bany has performed in all but one of its twenty-two festivals, which happen each June in Elkhart, Indiana.
According to Bany he was trying to get there early to set up before his set with son Martin Bany, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and pianist Rossano Sportiello, and had no idea that he was the only person receiving such an award. When he first entered the auditorium it was packed with people including his wife, son, daughter their spouses and grandchildren. “It was one of the best moments of my life,” says Bany. But for those of you who know Bany in typical Bany fashion even after he was presented this honor and performed a set with the band he packed up his bass and headed off to run a jam session with legendary drummer Butch Miles and Don Stille on piano.
You can see John Bany play each Sunday night at Andy’s Jazz Club in Chicago or Thursdays at the Chamber’s in Niles.
