Chicago pianist John Young, a popular performer in Chicago since the late 1940s, died at South Shore Hospital on April 16 at the age of eighty-six. Young performed with many of the finest jazz musicians in the world as they passed through Chicago. He appears on five Von Freeman recordings, was a regular member of Eddie Johnson's groups, and for many years could be seen frequently performing with the John Bany quartet for the weekly jazz jam session at Andy's. He was an inspiration to seasoned jazz veterans as well as young jazz musicians because of his creativity, kindness and youthful enthusiasm. "Young" John Young will be greatly missed on the Chicago jazz scene.
