Sophisticated Ladies” at Jazz Showcase
February 6, 2012 — 8 pm to 11 pm
“Ultra Sexy, Ultra Cool” KT McCammond with Jeremy Kahn and Jim Cox
For the new year, the Jazz Showcase has invited three of Chicago’s finest female interpreters of song to its stage. The new series’ title Sophisticated Ladies richly characterizes these three top-shelf artists: Elizabeth Doyle, Claudia Hommel and, opening the series, KT McCammond.
In keeping with what one critic called “a delightful balance of elegance and smartass”, McCammond has boldly named her contribution to Sophisticated Ladies, “Ultra Sexy, Ultra Cool”. Called “genuinely, wickedly funny”, this celebrated Chicago vocalist has been lauded for “amazing versatility and captivating personality and presence.”
What McCammond loves is music. All kinds of music. Years of playing in unconventional formats, not to mention her international upbringing, make the music soar. McCammond was born in Toronto, Canada, lived in Japan, grew up on the East Coast and came at last to Chicago. She was weaned on the music of the Big Bands, Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, as well as a myriad of Broadway Musicals. Her favorite records (and they were records back then!) were Rubber Soul, Sing a Song of Basie, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and Bizet's Carmen. Eclectic? Yes! And that hasn't changed.
When Wayne Segal opened the doors to the Jazz Showcase, McCammond jumped at the chance to bring it all together in this luxurious, listening room. Her first set will reprise tunes from her recent début album Finding My Way Home. Her second set will continue with songs from her most recent one-woman show Deconstructing La Diva.
“My CD pays homage to a rich heritage of musical expression. It began as a way to pick up the pieces after my husband’s death in 2009, but what I gained from it was a reawakening of my unique musical experience. I’ve sung in musicals, with a jazz quintet, in rock -and -roll bands as well as in cabaret rooms. And I've loved it all. A lot can be done with a mixture of jazz and cabaret. Just because the music takes a larger role, as in jazz, doesn’t mean the lyrics have to mean less. A song can take on many colors and moods depending on the bass line or the beat.”
Pairing up with a few of Chicago’s finest jazz musicians, Jeremy Kahn and Jim Cox, KT will perform such standard gems as “This Time the Dreams on Me”, music from Paris in the 1880s and a swinging rendition of Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”. There's even a nod to Lady Gaga and it's all presented with KT's special style: Ultra Sexy, Ultra Cool!
