"Night after night and note for note, there really is no better jazz pianist working in America today." – Neil Tesser, Chicago Reader
"…a powerhouse, an imaginative improviser with a Herculean technique…Hobgood addresses the instrument with a muscular power, a hard-driving sense of swing and a tonal imagination that instantly excite an audience." – Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune
"…one of the most incredible pianists I've ever heard." – Dave Brubeck
Celebrating his 20th anniversary of performing at the Green Mill, the introspective pianist Laurence Hobgood will bring a stellar quintet to the jazz club, 4802 N. Broadway, on Friday, July 11, from 9PM until 1AM. Hobgood’s quintet includes John Wojciechowski on saxophone, John Moulder on guitar, Rob Amster on bass, and Eric Montzka on drums.
Hobgood is best known for his 15-year collaboration with Kurt Elling on their several Grammy-nominated Blue Note recordings, which he produced and arranged, but he also has an impressive résumé beyond his work with Elling. He was recognized in 1995 as Chicagoan of the Year in the Arts by the Chicago Tribune and has released four critically acclaimed albums on the Naim audiophile label. The city of Chicago commissioned Hobgood to compose original works for its millennium celebration, and he has arranged works for the New York Shakespeare Festival.
From composing works incorporating classical music and jazz improvisation to his imaginative arrangements for the Kurt Elling Quartet, the Union Trio and Trio New, Hobgood has proven his versatility and talent, emerging as one of today’s best jazz musicians.
