Jazz Hippies & Hipsters Gypsies take a stab at Rock: One Night Only
They took the world by storm in 1992 as a co-headlining stadium tour. Now, seventeen years later, the Metallica and Guns N’ Roses tour finally graces Chicago - this time as two of the Windy City’s most unique jazz bands perform their material with an electrifying twist.
Local gypsy-jazz group, lePercolateur, kicks off the evening performing their own style of ‘hipster gypsy-jazz’, interspersing their set with classic GNR songs from the iconic 1987 “Appetite for Destruction” album. Featuring soulful singing intertwined with dexterous violin solos over exciting multi-guitar rhythms and a solid bass foundation, each member of this band brings their unique stylistic imprint to the mix. lePercolateur may be remembered for its gypsy-jazz interpretation of modern pop and rock music, but the group keeps audiences on their toes with a clever mixture of vocal and instrumental songs, including all the favorite jazz standards of the early 20th century.
In a co-headlining homage to the ’92 stadium tour, The Paul Abella Trio will then take the stage, and will add Metallica's 1986 “Master of Puppets” to their already audacious mix of jazz, samba, salsa, blues and rock. Taking inspiration from a long line of jazz musicians, The Paul Abella Trio is equal parts modern jazz band, eclectic jam band and populist bar band. And let's face it, any band with percussion just looks damn cool on stage.
This Friday the 13th, lePercolateur and The Paul Abella Trio hit the Store in Lincoln Park. Watch as these two Chicago jazz powerhouses share the stage for a night of jammin' grooves, groovin' jams and will attempt to play some music that is rarely, if ever, attempted in the jazz arena. The co-headline tour never made it to Chicago, but if you ever wanted to see Sanitarium and Rocket Queen played in the same night - this is a show you can’t miss!
