Madison Jazz Society to celebrate at free year-end party on June 12.
The Madison Jazz Society will hold its annual year-end party, celebrating its 27th year of presenting and preserving jazz in Madison, on Sunday, June 12, from 1-4 p.m. at the Coliseum Bar, 232 East Olin Avenue, Madison. The Retro Swing Band will perform at this free event.
The Retro Swing Band was formed in 1995 by Bob Schwarz and Les McChesney as a senior recreation band. Most of the personnel were retired music teachers and professional musicians, plus a few amateurs who enjoyed playing big band music. The band began to accept performance dates shortly after starting and eventually began playing for senior centers, assisted living facilities and nursing homes in the Madison area, bringing music of the big band era to those unable to get out to hear it.
At the beginning, the band’s library came from the Noblemen and the Zor Shrine performance bands. In 2002 Frank Ferriano, Professor of Music Emeritus from UW Whitewater, provided some arrangements for the band and eventually was invited to conduct the band. Today about 80% of the band's library are Ferriano’s arrangements. Some of the present members are from Whitewater, Lodi, Baraboo and Cambridge, as well as Madison.
The day will include a short business meeting, at which officers and board members for 2011-12 will be elected. Door prizes will be awarded all afternoon.
The event is free and the public is welcome to attend. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.
