The second concert of the Madison Jazz Society’s fall concert series will feature the Chicago Salty Dogs on Sunday, October 16, from 1-4 p.m. at the Coliseum Bar, 232 E Olin Avenue, Madison.
MJS President Linda Marty Schmitz said, “This band is comprised of musicians who are also members of the Original Salty Dog jazz band formed on the campus of Purdue University almost 60 years ago. We always take advantage of the opportunity to present these wonderful musicians on the MJS stage.”
The band plays jazz in the traditions of New Orleans and Chicago. The front line is composed of Andy Schumm, cornet; Kim Cusack, clarinet and Tom Bartlett, trombone. They are backed by Jack Kuncl, banjo; Mike Walbridge, tuba and Chuck Devore, drums. All of these musicians perform with other bands, as well as the Chicago Dogs, including performing for the Cubs band at Wrigley Field and performances at jazz events all over the country. Young members Schumm (age 26) and DeVore (age 33) are helping to preserve the future of jazz.
James Dapogny will be the special guest pianist. He was Professor of Music at the University of Michigan for over 40 years; has led his Grammy-nominated Chicago Jazz Band for over 31 years, touring North America and releasing numerous acclaimed records and CDs; author of Jelly Roll Morton-The Collected Piano Music and, in late 2002, took on the task of reconstructing jazz pianist’s James P. Johnson’s lost opera, De Organizer. In 2005 he completed reconstruction of Johnson’s other opera, The Dreamy Kid.
Concert tickets are $20 for MJS members; $25 for non-members and those age 18 and
younger are admitted free. Doors open at noon. Details can be found at www.madisonjazz.com or by calling 608-850-5400.
The Madison Jazz Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization formed to encourage the performance of and education about jazz.
