Madison Jazz Society features Chicago jazz band on November 7
West End Jazz Band will perform

The Madison Jazz Society will end its 2010 concerts on a hot note on Sunday, November 7, from 1-4 p.m. at the Coliseum Bar, 232 E Olin Avenue, Madison, presenting the West End Jazz Band from Chicago.
MJS President Linda Marty Schmitz said, “The West End Jazz Band has, for 35 years, recreated the classic music that typifies the 1920s and 1930s using original arrangements and instrumentation that is true to the style of the era. In addition, we are thrilled that we will be introducing the recipients of the Society’s 2010-11 school grant awards at this concert.”

The repertoire of the band consists of a broad representation of the music of this golden age, hot and sweet dance and jazz. Featured are the pure jazz numbers, the nonsense songs, the up-tempo tunes and also the beautiful ballads. This was the type of music for dancing and for those zany times when youth ran wild and made whoopee with songs such as Hop Off, Stockholm Stomp and The Charleston and beautiful ballads like Whose Honey Are You? and Stardust. Their book is full of great standards and obscure songs, as well as a number of straight dance medleys and waltzes that reflect the romantic and sweet side of that era.

The WEJB has performed at some of the most prestigious jazz festivals, played concerts throughout the U.S. and toured Europe twice; one trip included a week-long engagement at the

Hyatt Regency Hotel in Nice, France. The band has recorded seven CDs and makes an annual train trek to the Blue Lantern, an historic dance hall on Hudson Lake, Indiana, where jazz legend Bix Beiderbecke played in the summer of 1926. They also played the Sunday Jazz Brunch at the celebrated Milk Pail near Elgin, Illinois for over 12 years. Most of the band’s members are from the west side of Chicago, from which the band takes its name.

Concert tickets are $20 for MJS members; $25 for non-members and those age 18 and
younger are admitted free. Doors open at noon. Details can be found at www.madisonjazz.com or by calling 608-850-5400.

The Madison Jazz Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization formed to encourage the performance of and education about jazz. It annually sponsors six concerts and a jazz festival that attracts jazz fans from all over the nation. The group sponsors the broadcast of Riverwalk: Live from the Landing on Wisconsin Public Radio and awards grants to school music departments to enhance their jazz education programs. MJS was formed in 1984 and will sponsor its 23rd annual Capital City Jazz Fest in April 2011.
