Virtuoso pianist Mike Jones will bring his classic ‘20s through ‘40s-inspired jazz to the Green Mill Jazz Club, 4802 N. Broadway, for two performances, the first on Friday, May 1, from 9PM until 1AM, and the second on Saturday, May 2, from 8PM until midnight, accompanied by Kelly Sill on bass and Eric Montzka on drums.

Everyone who knows the music of Mike Jones agrees that he is the “greatest piano player no one knows”. With the release of his recording on Chiaroscuro, “Live at Steinway Hall”, for which Jones received rave reviews for his sure-handedness, versatility and pure excellence, this sentiment could be shortened to “greatest piano player”.

This solo piano CD showed Jones at his best – no edits were made, and each note of the standards played was reproduced exactly as it was performed. His last CDs, “Mike Jones Stretches Out” (Chiaroscuro) and “Live at the Green Mill” please listeners in the same way.

Obviously taking his cues from Oscar Peterson, Jones’s right hand is always moving, spinning out new ideas, while his left is busy pounding out hard-swinging, intricate bass lines. He has no qualms about playing one beat with his right hand another with his left, and enough talent to make it seem effortless as both rhythms come together.

With his infectious playing, it is exhilarating to hear Jones running wild, playing his versions of the standards.
