Jazz City: Mulligan Mosaics Big Band Friday, Oct. 7, 7:00p.m. Grand Crossing Park 7655 S. Ingleside
Family Friendly and Free
The legendary Gerry Mulligan was one of a handful of musical giants who was extremely influential as both a composer/arranger and as an instrumentalist. As a composer, his music was distinct and original. His melodies were masterpieces, logically structured and filled with wit and humor. As an arranger, his linear approach and clever use of counterpoint helped define the standard for modern jazz orchestration. As an instrumentalist, he was the most significant baritone saxophonist in the history of jazz. He was a brilliant soloist, able to communicate on both an intellectual and an emotional level. By using the full range of the instrument, he developed a very personal sound that has been widely imitated but never duplicated. Gerry Mulligan single-handedly established the baritone saxophone as a solo voice.
After an opportunity to meet Franca Mulligan, widow of the late master baritone player, composer, and arranger, Ted Hogarth decided he not only wanted to study Mulligan’s music, he wanted to perform it. The Mulligan Mosaics Big Band was formed in early May 2006 and had its first performance in July 2006. A member of big bands for years, this was the first time Hogarth led his own big band. The performance was a success and the newly formed band began to acquire a following and gigged throughout the area including the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2007.
The Mulligan Mosaics Big Band is comprised of some of Chicago’s top musicians, improvisers, and educators. All ensemble members are nationally or internationally recognized and include Chris Madsen on alto, Mark Colby and Rob Denty on tenor, Ted Hogarth and Nick Moran on baritone, Tim Coffman, Bryant Scott, and Thomas Matta on trombone, Terry Connell, Tom Tallman, and Art Davis on trumpet, Joe Policastro on bass, and Ed Breazeale on drums.
JazzCity is a free concert series initiated in 1997 by the Jazz Institute in collaboration with the Chicago Park District, now in its 14th season of bringing people together from across the city to listen to Chicago’s top jazz musicians. JazzCity is sponsored by WDCB 90.9 FM and WHPK 88.5 FM Radio and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information visit www.jazzinchicago.org
