Music, Money & You!
By Dr. Greta Pope
I am delighted to announce that I will be making regular contributions to Chicago Jazz Magazine and I hope that my articles will be helpful to working musicians and performers of all types. It is my hope that they will also be informative and interesting to readers who are not in the music business.
Performers attend the finest music conservatories, graduating with degrees in music performance, only to get out into the real world not knowing how to navigate their way. These performers often have not been trained to create work for themselves. They expect that a symphony orchestra or an opera company or a record producer will discover them and they will live happily ever after. That happens for some performers, but not for most. It is my hope that the Music, Money & You column will help you to move your career forward.
What exactly is entertainment and how can we as performers make ourselves viable in the entertainment arena?
Entertainment is a source of diversion, pastime and/or enjoyment. There are many types of entertainment including films, sports, symphony, theater, television, opera, video games and other activities. As independent musicians, all of these things are competitors to the types of entertainment that we offer. It is important that we understand this and begin to build our products and market ourselves in a way that will allow us to successfully attract the public’s attention and support.
In upcoming articles, I will address some of the ways in which we can attain success as independent performing artists.
Wishing you the very best in all of your endeavours!
