Perry Danos hails from Chicago, where the blues went electric, and where, to this day, a boundless variety of sounds echoes through the city streets – from rock, blues and jazz to R&B, country and the Symphony. Reflections of that potent musical mix shine through his new jazz release, Swingin’ on the Moon (GrandVista Music, Nashville, TN). The new disc is the latest achievement in a multifaceted, multi-city career.

Perry’s moving interpretations of some of his own favorites from that classic songbook are bottled in his latest CD, Swingin’ on the Moon, produced by Kevin Madill. “Perry does so many things well,” Madill says. “Swingin’ on the Moon highlights Perry’s vocal versatility. His R&B edge combined with his smooth jazz tone fill the whole project with a mellow groove.”

Swingin’ on the Moon has a little bit of all the things that make Perry Danos the captivating and fully rounded artist he is. The CD resonates with overtones from his influences – Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline, Elvis, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, the Beatles – and is enveloped in a “whole room of sound” populated with big-band brass as well as symphony strings. It features songs personally selected by Perry and his listening audience, “tunes that I truly love and that are also the most requested when I perform...and rather than the songs being ‘produced,’ I was able to record them exactly the way I hear them.”

Recorded in Nashville, the disc features some of the best musicians around: Doug Moffet, Mark Douthit, Mike Haynes, Barry Green, George Tidwell, Bob Mater, Craig Nelson, David Angell, David Davidson, and Steve Willets among many others. “People don’t realize Nashville is one of the best-kept jazz secrets! There are some great jazz and big band players here and that’s why we recorded in Music City!”

Perry Danos has a natural ability to focus his talents and select the perfect music for taking listeners on a thrilling journey into yesteryear. He has a superb voice, an R&B style, and a natural flair for singing America’s favorite standards. He did not record Swingin’ on the Moon as a typical nostalgia throwback, but as a personal preference, and with a pure affinity for the quintessential tunes that made American music great.

“This is not a new twist. I’m not reinventing the standards, I’m just adding my brand to the translation,” Danos said. “Swingin’ on the Moon is the spirit of music, and I hope it just reaches out and touches people.”

Swingin’ on the Moon is a splendid listening experience that will satisfy a whole rainbow of music lovers, whether their tastes tend to the sounds of yesterday, today, or tomorrow.

Perry Danos Day in Chicago May 7th, CD release party at The Joynt May 8, and performing South Loop Best Buy in-store May 17.
