The Idlewild Foundation presents the Saugatuck-Douglas Jazz Festival on July 31 and August 1, 2009 in Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan.

Artistic director Jim Cooper has assembled an impressive and broad range of musicians and instruments consisting of horns (trumpets, saxophones and trombones), strings (violins, violas, harp, guitar, double bass, electric bass), percussion instruments (vibraphone, organ, piano, drums and congas) and vocalists.

The festival will begin Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Saugatuck Brewing Company with the Marcus Miller Quintet. The remainder of the night will focus upon the string instrument concept of My Favorite Things II which will feature harpist Onita Sanders, guitarist Ron English and his trio and Musique Noire; a string and percussion ensemble with two violins and a viola on the front line.

On Saturday morning at 11:30 the eighteen piece Flat River Big Band will lead the festivalgoers in a parade into lakeside Coghlin Park where Flat River, GEQ, Barbara Ware with the Cliff Monear Trio, Cooper, Hay, Van Lente Group, Cruz Brothers and the New York based hard bop cooperative group One For All will perform in the sunshine.

While the music is being played on Dr. Dan's Bandstand (named in honor of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams; the first physician to perform open heart surgery), the festivalgoers will have an opportunity to see jazz movies and an Idlewild documentary and to purchase food at the Saugatuck United Methodist Church. Food and artwork will also be available for purchase at Coghlin Park.

Beginning at 7:00 p.m. beautiful music will take the stages at Saugatuck United Methodist Church, Saugatuck Christian Reformed Church and at the Saugatuck Brewing Company for the performances of Shahida Nurullah, Marion Hayden, What Not Inn Trio, GEQ, Marcus Miller Quintet, Gary Tu Trio and Barbara Ware with the Cliff Monear Trio. Also, on the program will be a theatrical presentation of a fictional dinner meeting with W.E.B. DuBois, Madam C.J. Walker and Dr. Williams - all with Idlewild, Michigan roots in A Night at the Idlewild Club House.

Tickets for the indoor venues are $20. Tickets for Coghlin Park are $40. Children under 15 are free. Discount packages are available. Tickets can be purchased online at www.s-djazz.com or (313) 965-0505.

Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged for Coghlin Park. No glass, grills or alcohol permitted in the park.

The Saugatuck-Douglas Jazz Festival is supported by the MICHIGAN COUNCIL FOR ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS and the NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
