What’s happening on the scene this weekend in Chicago.
Here is what will be a very brief preview of what shows to catch this weekend throughout Chicago. I recently performed at a Jazz Salon and the question came up as to where to see live jazz and if I thought the Jazz scene in Chicago was slowing dying.
My answer is NO!
You can find great players playing at different venues throughout the Chicagoland area however the venue is not specifically a jazz club. Restaurants, bars, theaters and schools are presenting jazz these days making it easy to see and hear great music but you just have to look for it!

Andy’s Jazz Club located at 11 E. Hubbard is presenting a large ensemble named the Chicago Yestet this Friday and Saturday Dec 16 and 17 at 9:30pm. The group includes such notable Chicago musicians as John Wojciechowski – alto, Greg Fishman – tenor, Geoff Bradfield – tenor, Marques Carroll – trumpet, Marquis Hill – trumpet, Tom Garling - trombone, Joel Adams – trombone, Ryan Cohan – piano, Jeff Parker –guitar, Lorin Cohen - bass Dana Hall – drums, Rob Dz and Maggie Burrell - vocals
The Jazz Showcase located at 806 S Plymouth Ct in Chicago has the world renown jazz trio the Bad Plus performing Thursday-Sunday. Call ahead for reservations because these shows will sell out.
The Green Mill located at 4802 N. Broadway in Chicago on Friday and Saturday nights will be featuring Bari Sax man Bob Mintzer with Joel Spencer on drums and Dan Trudell on B-3 Hammond Organ. This band is sure to play deep in the pocket all night. Shows are at 9pm on Fridays and 8pm on Saturdays.
Katerina’s located at 1920 W Irving Park Rd in Chicago will be featuring the hard driving Latin band Conjunto this Friday night December 16th. Also this weekend pianist Tom Muellner and vocalist Spider Saloff will be performing their annual holiday show on Saturday night Dec 17th 6:30pm.
J Alexander’s located at 1832 North Clybourn Avenue in Chicago will be featuring the group Spiral (Mike Jeffers, Demos Petropolous and Mike Frost. Every Thursday-Saturday 6pm-9pm and Sundays 11am-2pm. The band performs jazz standards and holiday jazz classics in the lounge.
