The first release from the Sparrow Sound Design record label is the 1978 LP “Sparrow – Latin Black”. Recorded in SSD’s old studio on Dayton Street in Lincoln Park, mixed by the late, great Michael Rasfeld at ACME Studio and produced by Chicago filmmaker Michael Humphreys, “Latin Black” marked Sparrow’s inception of releasing recordings of Chicago artists to a world market. What followed was a group of releases, including pianist Dave Gordon’s “Bagel O’ Fun” and poet David Hernandez and his group “Street Sounds”. In 1984, SSD relocated on Southport Avenue, and the Southport Records label was born with its first 1986 LP release, Joanie Pallatto “Whisper Not.” Soon to follow was the debut recording of piano legend Willie Pickens as a leader, “It’s About Time” and the first CD Release from Chicago’s own saxophone great Von Freeman - “Walkin’ Tuff!” As producers and recording engineers for the past thirty-two years, Sparrow and Pallatto currently present 130 titles in the Southport Catalog.
