Katerina’s – an eclectic club with its soul in the arts.
Featured on May 2nd, 2009 is a CD Release Party from DePaul University legend, pianist/composer George Flynn and his new CD “American City” on The Southport Composers Series.
For this performance, Mr. Flynn will perform extractions from “The Density of Memory” for piano and two clarinets, with Julie DeRoche and Larry Combs, and solo piano on "An Inner Glance" and "Introduction and Lullaby" from “Pieces of Night” (Southport Composers Series CD 0095.) Flynn will also play another short piano piece, "A Glimpse of Sid Kleinman." Joanna Jamroziak, a fine soprano who performs with the Millennium Chamber Players, will sing with Flynn on his song "From an Island." Special Guest is future Southport Composers Series artist and CUBE Contemporary Chamber Ensemble member Janice Misurell-Mitchell, performing her compositions “border crossings at sunset” and “Blooz Man/Poet Woman,” both for flute and voice. Finally, Mr. Flynn promises to present rigorous improvisations as well!
The music of George Flynn is no mere stance; his melodies are full of circumstance. George Flynn's compositions have the ability to overwhelm and amaze with intense expression and musical abandon.
Flynn, late in his career as a faculty member at DePaul University in Chicago, made the decision to write a work for each of the major ensembles in the School of Music- the chorus/chamber choir (St. Vincent's Words, 1995), the orchestra (The Density of Memory, 1997) and wind ensemble (American City, 1998). These works on “American City” are all performed by DePaul University musicians - faculty, students and an alumna, and were recorded in the DePaul University Concert Hall (2006-2007.)
"American City" is a new release from The Southport Composers Series.
This series of sound experiments and compositions documents new classical music from Chicago to a world market. Southport Records was founded in 1977 by pianist/composer/engineer Bradley Parker-Sparrow in response to the lack of production of new music in Chicago, from Chicago.
