This concert highlights the winner of the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee, illustrious jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater’s joyful tribute to Billie Holiday. “This album is my way of paying my respect to a vocalist who made it possible for singers like me to carve out a career for ourselves,” says Bridgewater, who performed the role of Holiday in the triumphant theatrical production, Lady Day. Versatile guitarist Russell Malone opens the program with intimate works for trio.

Tuesday, February 14: Kurt Elling

Friday, February 17: Preservation Hall Band
“Ma Maison”
Preservation Hall Jazz Band with the Trey McIntyre Project

Symphony Center comes alive with the spirit of New Orleans when we present “Ma Maison,” the stunning dance collaboration between the Trey McIntyre Project and Preservation Hall Jazz Band. New Orleans’ Times-Picayune said, “I could almost hear the clatter of bones as nine skeletons, dressed in Carnival motley, shimmied to the wailing clarinet, dangled loose-limbed arms to the thrum of the banjo, and jerked their heads, as if nagged by the long, steady roll of the snare.”

Friday, March 9: Nicholas Payton
Nicholas Payton Television Studio Orchestra
Nicholas Payton trumpet

Trumpet wizard Nicholas Payton, praised for “the sheer range of his expression” (Chicago Tribune) after his appearance on the 2010-11 SCP Jazz Series, returns with his own big band, the Television Studio Orchestra. “Mr. Payton’s gifts as a trumpet soloist have never been open to question, and now with this latest effort he establishes himself as a composer.
