By popular demand: Hot Club of Detroit returns to ECC March 4 & 5 The Hot Club of Detroit returns to Elgin Community College Arts Center, building on a popular engagement last year, on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5.
The quintet performs at 8 p.m. on both nights at the college, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
For more than seven decades, combos called “Hot Clubs” have channeled the gypsy jazz sound of French guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Since they founded the first Hot Club in Paris in 1934, the combos have spread throughout the globe, swinging settings as diverse as Tokyo, San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, Sweden, Norway, and Austria.
Hot Club of Detroit offers a fresh take on the tradition—substituting the violin with a saxophone and an accordion, and incorporating a more modern jazz sound. Since its founding in 2003 by lead guitarist Evan Perri, the group has quickly risen to prominence, garnering critical acclaim and five Detroit Music Awards. Their current release is 2010’s It’s About That Time.
“We use the gypsy jazz thing as a springboard for all these wonderful ideas we have in our heads that we’ve grown up with here in Detroit,” Perri explains. “In the future, I’d even like to incorporate some Motown.”
Tickets are $20 for the March 4 show and $25 for March 5. A French-themed gourmet dinner prepared by students of ECC’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Program can be purchased for an additional $21. Dinners must be purchased in advance by Wednesday, March 2.
